Sullivan Cottage

This is the first of the cottages (residence halls) to be described.  For the most part (with the exception of the Tekakwitha and DuBois Cottages), the design, construction materials, size, vintage and appearance of the cottages are relatively similar.  The design of the building is 2.5 stories with a full, unfinished basement.  Building area (excluding the upper one-half story) is 10,275 square feet.  The building was built in 1911, indicating the building to be one of the first components of the campus.

Roof framing consists of wood materials, although the exterior walls and interior dividing walls reportedly consists of a hollow core brick versus wood frame.  The exterior of the building has a stucco finish.  The main floor layout includes a kitchen with adjacent pantry; dining room; recreation room; classroom; and two living quarters for onsite personnel.  The second floor layout includes sixteen small bedrooms (similar to a dorm room); and four larger control rooms (secured living areas); and two offices for staff use.  There are two, one-half baths on the main floor, along with two full baths on the second floor.

Ingress/egress to the second floor is provided by an interior, open stairway, along with an exterior stairway of steel pipe rail construction.  Building design includes a large, covered porch with unique support pillars at one end of the building.  Plus, there is a small, three-season porch off the kitchen.  The building is entirely heated and cooled, with a gas-fired boiler in the basement and multiple air-conditioning condenser units.

This is the only secured cottage building, with security features including a controlled-use elevator; unbreakable glass on the upper level; steel security doors between different room areas; and four control rooms for behaviorally problematic parties.  These rooms have their own stainless steel sink and toilet.

Other notable aspects of this building include two fireplaces that open up to the staff quarters on the main floor.  Also, there is a fenced recreation area, accessible by stairway from the second floor of the building only.

Notable, recent improvements include remodeling of the second floor 1980; roof covering replacement in 1982; replacement of the boiler in 1982; the installation of air conditioning in 1985; remodeling of the main floor in 1990; and ADA access remodeling in 1995.
