| City & Region The subject property is located in the city of Sauk Centre, which is in the central area of the state of Minnesota. The location roughly midway between Minneapolis/St. Paul to the southeast and Fargo/Moorehead to the northwest. The city is located along Interstate Highway 94. Nearby communities with freeway frontage include Melrose, Albany, Avon and St. Cloud to the southeast, and Alexandria to the northwest. Other nearby communities include: Osakis, Grey Eagle, Glenwood, Elrosa, Paynesville, Starbuck and Long Prairie. Sauk Lake is located partially within the city itself and is the commencing point of the Sauk River. Two highways pass through Sauk Centre, which are U.S. Highway 71 and Minnesota Highway 28, contributing to its accessibility. The Greyhound bus line serves the community. The population of Sauk Centre has remained relatively stable over the past 30 or so years. The population is as follows: 1970 at 3,750 residents; 1980 at 3,709; 1990 at 3,646 residents; and the 1994 estimate at 3,735 residents. The city is located at the west end of Stearns County and the population of the county has risen at a steady rate. The county's population in 1970 was 95,400 residents and the 1994 estimated population is 125,171 residents. A large part of the population increase in the county can be attributable to the City of St. Cloud and its immediate area. A claim to fame of Sauk Centre is being the birthplace of Sinclair Lewis, who was America's first winner of the Nobel Prize for literature. Mr. Lewis is best known for his fictional work Main Street.
